Taking My Time

How can my motivation be simultaneously so high and so low on a Friday? It’s high because I just want to get all my work done as soon as possible so that I can get out of here for the weekend, and it’s low because I just want to chill and do nothing all day (I’m already in weekend mode).

As a carpenter or more colloquially known as a chippie, it’s my job to frequent every hardware store near Bentleigh and find/purchase the best materials for the job I’m working at. This is one of my favourite things to do at work because it’s a good way to waste time. For example, no one is going to question me if I tell them that I had to drive to several hardware stores in the Bayside area to find one specific type of hardware. That’s just the nature of the job.

I like to make this work to my advantage in the sense that I ALWAYS tell people that I had a really difficult time finding the right materials for the job. I tell them that I had to do all this extra work in order to get exactly what was needed and they believe me every time. What do I actually do during this time? Well I spend five minutes buying the best plumbing supplies available in Cheltenham and then the next fifty five minutes scrolling through social media on my phone. It’s a good life.

So to go back to the beginning of my blog post and tie all of this together, I’ll let you in on a little secret. On Friday’s I like to spend double the amount of time searching for materials than on a regular work day. The best part about it is that I’ve never been caught or called out for wasting company time because everyone else on a Friday truly couldn’t care less.
